Hello reader in the past, I’m writing to you from the future.
Not a very far future, in fact I think I might just be 8 hours ahead of you..
I’m in the Netherlands, in Rotterdam outside a venue called Worm.
I’ve been here enjoying myself with Linda the head commentator of YIKIS on the first floppy festival named ‘Floppy Totaal’, a festival truly dedicated to this format that everyone so loves and cares about.
At the moment I’m just chilling out from the impressively impressive evening. Linda just took the time machine back to the past to meet up with a friend, but I’m just enjoying the newly gained lobit buzz mixing up with the night sounds of Rotterdam city.
What a program, what an evening! As your host from the future I can tell you that the first ‘Floppy Totaal’ festival was a successful success. Everything went smoothly, well organized acts, amazing music, a sea of floppy diskettes and so much fun.
I really should go home back to the past for a good rest after this brilliant floppy celebration,
but as Linda is using the time machine at the moment I thought to kill my waiting time writing a little review that might inspire you (the people in the past) to come over here when the time is ready, as this floppy festival is one no serious music lover and floppy fetishist should miss out on.
In fact me and Linda have seen you at the venue a few hours back, and you told me in person that you were so very glad to have read my report written from the future, as it stimulated you to come and experienced ‘the floppy time of your life’ (I’m quoting here your own words, mind you!). It was great to meet you at the festival, Linda even gave you a few beers! (That might be enough for some to come, right?)
But without spoiling too much, I can tell you that the doors opened around 20:30 and the friendly people at the door let me and Linda in for free when I showed them 2 Floppy Diskettes. How cool is that? I know Floppies are precious and worth gold, but now it felt a bit like a ‘golden ticket’ to the Charlie’s’ Chocolate Factory, except that it wasn’t a Chocolate Factory but a floppy festival.
My memory is pretty wasted as I’ve been sipping Floppy Juice from a secret admirer who had been working at the bar of the place, but I can remember a very lovely atmosphere. Everything was very laid back, the tall and thin host of the evening named Niek did a fantastic job announcing the artists and the happenings like a professional ringmaster from a well-traveled circus.
Linda obtained the not even out yet release from ‘The Caring Babies’ and I scored some floppies from Rainbow Valley and a beautiful diskette release with music of the Japanese artist Akane Hosaka.
I think it was really nice to see this collection of floppy diskette releases together, It made us feel warm inside as if they were new born creative babies that you wanted to take core for.. This reminds me of Linda and how she lovingly added The Caring Babies floppy in her pocket..
Me and Linda enjoyed the floppy movies and the commentator Florian Cramer. It was not only good film material, but also informative and imaginative. It’s amazing to see how good lobit encoded movies look on the big screen, and how psychedelic the blobs of data loss turns into beautiful visual elements.
The event had a nice group of friendly nosey people attending and I remember the little reunion of us hooking up with the gifgirls from the best Dutch underground music platform named Gifgrond. It was a happy moment in which we shared a kroket and danced on wooden shoes which one of the gifgirls had brought for this special floppy occasion.
The other amazing thing was the meeting of the one and only netlabel, diy label and provocative underground legend from Germany ‘Sascha Müller’. It is so weird to meet, see and hear such a legend in real life.. I felt a bit intimidated as he is such an incredible figure who is basically everywhere ,doing everything; that in my mind he had somehow become a mythological god of some kind. And now he was here in real life in flesh and blood providing lobit noise that got the speakers buzzing and toes tapping! Amazing set from an amazing artist, I can’t say it enough!
The artists from the Hungarian Floppy Kick label (one of the more prominent floppy labels out there!) had provided a really great presentational show with performances of label owner Eoforwine, whose floppy ‘The Flood’ and floppy split with the energetic punks the Chochos y Moscas are among the most favorite in my personal collection.
Also artist Dr. Kondor did an great performance doing a solo noise show which kept me totally flabbergasted.. Linda was visually more impressed by Kornél Bíró who makes music as the very popular Bass-O-Matic. His set was indeed one of the highlights which to me didn’t come as a surprise as his album ‘the first issue’ was absolutely a blessing of awesomeness.
The one responsible for the cutest floppies in the venue was nobody less than the performing artist coming all the way from the coastal village of Southend on Sea (UK). It was not only amazing to yet again meet up with this beautiful lovely person in real life (I’ve met him a couple of years ago in Lobith, the Netherlands at the Lobit festival..) , but it was even more special to hear his lovely lobit live performance. It was mesmerizing, warm, lovely.. Basically all the trademarks that makes lobit such an appealing life saver… To me the live performance of Rainbow Valley was the highlight of the evening, it really filled up the venue with a loving feeling..
Like I said.. I can’t remember all the details, as the floppy drinks and time traveling simply don’t mix too well, but I do know it was a spectacular night, one that inspired with interesting art, love for the lobit rate and of course a place in which floppies and floppy lovers could finally join together for a higher feeling of togetherness.
Ah, how about that? The time machine has returned from bringing back Linda to the past so she could meet up with a friend (some friends aren’t into floppies..) , So I finally can go back to the past for a great night rest with lots of dreams of this spectacular floppy festival. Ah, before I forget..
I know you will be coming, but for your friends who are simply too far away to make it, please share them the following link, as like a touch of magic the floppy festival will be successfully streamed all over the globe so no lobit and floppy fetishist needs to miss out on this history making FLOPPY TOTAAL the Floppy Diskette Festival! Here is the link, tune in from around +- 20:30 Netherlandic time) ::
