Hello and welcome at a special edition of YIKIS. You might wonder why everything is in unreadable burned orange. It’s because I’m sitting here inside a pumpkin, inside another pumpkin, located in yet another pumpkin. I’m here to bring you a very exclusive interview with someone real reporters would like to interview, but don’t have the spectacular environment to do so. I’m talking about the very beautiful, talented, intriguing Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin.
Out of pure appreciation I brought a mini talking pumpkin as a present to thank her for going through all this hassle of answering questions. Unfortunately in the wait for the arrival of Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin, the pumpkin ate all my burning questions. No problem as the ones that didn’t burn should be enough material to hopefully get to know Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin a little bit more.. Even if it is just a millimeter more!
Ah, brace yourself! The legend herself just carved her way into the pumpkins!! Exciting times indeed!
Hello Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin, how are you?
Are you not too tired from digging your way through the pumpkins to end up in this pumpkin?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: I’m a little tired, but I met a lot of interesting characters on the way
Before I’ll find some questions that don’t burn; might I compliment you on your virtual repertoire and presence on Youtube? The audio/visual world that you show comes across to me as if an illustrious and imaginatively bright illustrator was working hard on a fantastic book full of fantasy illustrations and dipped the feather in liquid acid instead of normal coloring ink.
Are there any creatures in your house planning a coloring book based on their surroundings?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: Thank you! All of us at Electric Phantom are dedicated to and focused on presenting audio/visual storytelling. I feel that a song by itself, is more easily forgotten over time… there are so many songs.. infinite songs, that even If you love a song with all of your heart, eventually it may disappear from your memory if you hadn’t heard it in a long time.. But the impact that music with visuals has, I think is much more long lasting.. Everything that really GOT to me, that penetrated my mind as a child was like that. The things that I recall mattering the most.
A coloring book WOULD be neat, wouldn’t it?
I’m not sure if we can get drinks inside this pumpkin, inside another pumpkin, located in another pumpkin; but if it had been possible; what would you fancied drink wise? We can just pretend to drink it!
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: Oh well… I like water, coffee, tea, and most alcohol. Oh and Moxie. I will try and remember drinking them all, all at once.
Alright let’s get this interview going with the oh so not burning question:
How many pumpkins do you have, and how do you have any tips how to keep them happy and healthy?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: haha well at the moment I’m really the only pumpkin, but I have had pumpkins in the past… And I did hang out with a couple this last Halloween. I think the key to keeping pumpkins happy is to let them do what they want to do…and sorta like the house plants..
you should wake them up.. but unlike them, it doesn’t have to be at noon, just when you think they’ve had enough sleep.
You seem to be also fond of fish, especially the handsome ones that can talk; is the online gossip true that you have a special relationship with a fish? Or is this totally quack from the gossip press?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: Yes! Very much so.. Well they are so strange… It’s hard to describe how they make me feel.. I guess so far I’ve recorded 3songs concerning fish: Fish Drive Edsels, Frozen Fish, and Age of Devonian.
The big fish story is this.. Me and my friend Brandi were skipping school one day.. I had this plan to buy a fish and send it in the mail to the Residents. I’m really not quite sure why, but I thought it was a great idea at the time… So we walked to the grocery store and I bought a fish and sent it away in the mail. I never really got a response concerning it.. Maybe it never even made it over there… It wasn’t to be mean.. I thought it would be a sorta fun, kooky gesture… But anyhow I ended up writing about it because it was a pretty strange experience.
On a side note, I just watched Neil Shubin’s “Your Inner Fish” and thought it was incredible. He talks extensively about the Devonian period in it, so I sent him a link to Age of Devonian, because I thought he might like it. And he did! That was pretty neat.
On another side note, fish seems to be a reoccurring theme with my friends as well. Chimney Crow have a few songs about fish… Clockwork Quartet just came out with a new album called “Fish for a Heart’ and Norwood Grimes has “Secret Salmon”….. I wonder why…
Personally I really like how your voice sounds, it’s coming across like a bird at a grainy dawn after multiple smoky cabaret experiences. Do you have any theater experience perhaps?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: hahah I wonder what kind of bird… I do love cabaret.. I think it’s neat that there is a resurgence of that kind of entertainment and aesthetic! I was at one time in a theatre program but I never was too involved though, cause to be honest I am actually a bit shy. Though that may seem shocking! But I do LOVE a lot of musical theatre.
I noticed some collaborations in your videos, with who (if any) would you (in a perfect world) loved to collaborate in the futuristic future? Either them being dead, or alive?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: Oh my.. Now that is a hard one. There are really so many people I think would be cool to work with… mmm Leon Redbone, Ben Vereen, Janelle Monae, Klaus Nomi… There are countless people from every decade that I can think of. I’d have to name every artist I liked!
Is the squirrel in Picked Fences unharmed?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: Oh absolutely! Would never harm a squirrel! I guess unless one was trying to tear my face off or something like that..
Your songs are often very poetic, do you write all your words yourself? Do you have a secret theme that hangs all of them together?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: Thank you. Yes. I write everything, and play everything on my recordings unless its noted. Sometimes I will ask for assistance with percussion/beats/drums. I write lyrics first, and have always heard melodies to lyrics in my head when I write them.. So I will sing a sketch of the song with no music according to what I hear.. and then try to write the music around that.. It will change a little bit, but stays close enough to the original melody that was in my head. No overall theme.. mostly just things I’ve experienced or noticed that struck me in a strange way.. I will say about Fish Drive Edsels (the album) that it was actually ALL written in 1992.
There are many young and upcoming rising stars still in the cupboards looking up to you with big eyes and gigantic ears; can you give future performers some tips how to get the most out of their talents?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: hmmm tips..
- Just do it. You can waste a lot of time waiting for the right moment or situation. Don’t let that time pass you by. Do this when you are passionate to do this.
- Don’t be a perfectionist. It’s better to have made something then to have struggled with it not being perfectly how you envisioned it and abandoning t for that reason.
- Don’t be afraid to go it alone. It’s very difficult to find the right people a lot of the time that will share your vision. If you can’t then just play all of the parts. You can do it.
- Don’t be humble. Regardless of your level of confidence, no one will hear you if you are humble. You may have to do things that you may not be comfortable with to promote yourself. And in DIY world that is key if you want an audience.
- Keep in mind it’s actually a lot of hard work. You have to be dedicated.
As a total gay I have to say that I love the way you dress and present yourself. You look formidable under your hat, and you spot such an approachable unapproachable informal formal & pretty in an unseen-before-way look. It’s vintage but modern, blossoming and yet so nicely decaying;
do you have any favorite pieces or costumes in your collection that you love so much you could wear it all day and night?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin: Thank you.. I like all of the dichotomies! Well I have to have my top hat… I look for color.. I like form fitting things, colorful things, playful things, and classic things. The worst thing to me is to be dull and beige. I like contrast and impact!
I can believe you being quite content with living your private life between the tree’s, fruits, house plants, eyeball-hands, sock puppets, drumming teddy bears, friends, colors, vegetables. What was it that you decided to share your world with the rest of the world?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin:Well it was my original intention.. It’s what I meant to do long ago. Somewhere along the line I got distracted or gave up hope. Electric Phantom called me back to complete myself.
I wanted to thank you for taking the time to do this little interview; here is my gift for you; a pumpkin full of burning questions. Hope you like it.. Keep it away from questions though, as it might eat them.. That’s the kind of pumpkin this is.. By the way (for pumpkin’s sake) are you a vegetarian?
Petunia-Liebling MacPumpkin:Wow.. I am indeed! Did something give it away? (I WONT eat the pumpkin though be assured!)
Oh my look at the time! The melon already has started its rotting’s process! We better stop and get ourselves out of this pumpkin, inside a pumpkin, located in a pumpkin mess!
