YIKIS Chitterchat: The Best Albums of 2015

Alex Spalding
Alex
Hello! So, some of you already know about this, but Luna recently came up with the brilliant idea of all of us YIKIS writers doing a top 5 list of each of our fave albums of 2015, and then each of us can comment about all of it. I figured the best way to do this would be to start a mass text.

Even if you don’t wanna make a list, you can still comment or say hi or ridicule us. At the end, if this ever ends, I’m just gonna copy and paste the entire chat log as a review on YIKIS. So, like… don’t put anything here you wouldn’t be comfortable appearing in public. Like, Idk… nude photos, secret love letters…

Also, since KN is out of YIKIS-town for a bit, we’ll probably just have to write his list for him, put things we think he probably liked a lot, or random stuff that maybe he never listened to. Good opportunity for shameless self-promotion!

I’ll get us started… my #5 pick for greatest albums of 2015 was Odessey And Oracle And The Casiotone Orchestra. It was pretty great. I don’t know if anybody else listened to that thing… um… anyway…

Reed
I’ve listened to maybe three albums that were released this year, & almost all of them were doom metal; I’ve really been out of the loop lately.

Alex Spalding

Alex
What were they? I guess your list is gonna be slim 😀

Reed
Monolord’s new album Vænir, Bell Witch’s Four Phantoms, the rest escape me now.
Adrian
I was definitely not as impacted by the casiotone orchestra as ye were sirrest of sirs
Also I’m slightly inebriated and feeling uh…obnoxious so we’ll see how zis goes 😀
Adrian
Not only did I listen to it, I reviewed it too lol
Adrian
Sorry, this is going to be a wall of text so…I’ll try to do this as continuously as possible (also holy fuck I want a cig but I’m in the writing zone). #5 – Senpai Suicide Club/I Killed Techno! Split. That was fun to review and a swell release as well. #4 Miss Bolivia by Meeko Cheech. The sounds resonate with the fiber of my spirit and such. #3 – What The Fuck Is Sweetcore? by Pink Punk Boy, this was such a fun release haha. I throw this on when I’m feeling hyper etc. makes for some interesting times. #2. Zarbi Zibou by Zarbi Zibou. Super groovy shit right here. Seriously, you have no idea how many times I am almost inside of my apartment complex late at night and the Zibou Theme comes on and I’m struttin and dancin like nobodies business. #1 Supercool & Platinum by Dark Willow but I’m lumping them together because they’re done by the same band. Seriously, probably one of the few bands recently that I just instantly fell insanely in love with. Fucking talented with some amazing melodies songs etc. Fuck it. I’m going to vote for them next year even though it’ll be 2016 (haha Odyssey reference…sorta…not really, they have a song titled 2016 for those who don’t know).
Johan
I’ve only listened to Lady Gaga…..again
Johan
but #5 is Fatal Casualties – Psalm
#4 Vials – Chrysalis
#3 XNDL – MMXIV
#2 no idea 🙂
#1 Various – This Silent Sea
ohw wait #2 is a single track: Caffetine-The Art Of Murder (Featuring Claus Larsen)
Adrian
woohoo
2 lists down
two to go
wait
that is completely incorrect
Cameron
I’ve only listened to my own brain for the past 27 years. Its like a massive Cameron hotel and my voice is on the PA all the damn time.
Resquin
i’ll listen yrs hashtags bands
seems aweaome all of then
hi mom!!
look, i’m speak english 🙂
xoxo
Johan
wow, I’m not even friends with you ;(
Adrian
i’m lost and confused
ok you know what
i say we all introduce ourselves
Adrian
I’ll start. I am Adrian. I hail from the bloated corrupted pig that is the United States. I start making music 7 years ago. I eventually got an EP released through Sirona, and Alex reviewed it! So, I started perusing YIKIS and got many an awesome release due to them. Then sometime earlier this year I sent in a review and have been trying to clear the backlog of requested reviews ever since.
Adrian
Oh and I go by the moniker Caffeinate.
Cameron
Hello there Adrian. Pleasure to make your acquaintance. I hope that Trump fellow gets his hair sorted out soon as he looks disastrous with that do. As well as his personality and opinion being very… Bad.
Cameron
Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Cameron. A Scottish bearded man. Bred for one purpose alone, to transcend states of beard and music. I’ve released music since around 2001/2002 and am responsible for such monikers as Swin Deorin, Bash Nova, Icolmkill, Shooting Birds Out The Sky, Lost In Japan and have released many many many free releases.
Resquin
i meant, all bands, of everybody, sorry my bad english hahaha
Johan
Hija, I’m Johan 🙂 Used to release under Caelicus Pugna. Spend some time running SPeu, the european version op SP recordings. Reviewed a lot in the past, but now struggeling with a lot of other things that take up my time. Building a new house, two kids, work, game development and Longboarding (when it is dry in this too flat of a country called the Netherlands).

Still want to get back in DIY with Inverterted Records. Have an offer standing of someone that if I hit a certain target I can get exposure on record label owners meeting prior to some sort of big festival/congress. Hope that will work one day 🙂

Johan

And I only drink special beers and whisky from Islay or Skye!

Johan Nederpel named the conversation: YIKIS chitterchat.

Cameron
You should see if you can get Buckfast tonic wine… The caffeine content is terrifying.
Adrian
That sounds like it’s right up my alley.

Alex
omg, this chatlog is beautiful so far. Oh, my number 4 album of the year is probably that Caffeination Records compilation. It was fun. I’ve gotta go again, I’ll blah blah more albums of the year later. ❤ you all!

Adrian
Oh snap really? Thanks for zee spot on your top 5!
Linda
Hey, Linda here 😀 YIKIS fan and commenter, originating from the country of cheese, korket/croquet, flat green fields and euh… Indonesian food, Chnese food, Surname food, French food, Belgian fries and beer, taoas restaurants, American fast food ‘restaurants’, pizzarias (both Italian, Egyptian and American style), Turkish food (shops) and herring. Fav top 5 albums….. that is difficult to say, especially as I am aware I certainly will mix up 2014 and 2015. BRB, I’m gonna have a little scroll through YIKIS but out of my head I liked the album of artists finishing songs from other artists, the newest Clockwork Orchestra (and actually most artists that have performed on Gifgrond this year, I am foremost a great Gifgrond fan) and uh brb….
Linda
oh I have injured my good eye btw, so there might be some typos
just a little side question: should the album be released in 2015 or is the criteria that it has been reviewed in 2015?
Linda
Disregard the albums, I’d like to mention that the interviews of 2015 deserve a special mentioning. The intruiging questions and honest answers, but notwithstanding the beautiful decorating and illustrating collage artworks. I still have the artwork from the interview of Cyrocolcano on my home lappy. I use the album artwork of MutanT.R.I at the workhorse.
Linda
oh this browsing will take awhile, I need to see at least the album art to remember the music and I see none in the monthly overview
Linda
Brk – IIIIII was very good to work at, very short too, could have lasted longer. But it also gave me the ‘it’s 4:27am on the dancefloor where the hell is everyone else” feelings. Very touchy so to speak.
I had fun with this one too: Can Can Heads is Ruining the Classics
wait, maybe I should post the links too
Adrian
OH MY GOD GUYS IT’S YIKIS TOP COMMENTER LINDA!
Linda
so far mor monologuist
Adrian
Ah you are correct. I can assemble links together for the final product once this is wrapped up.
So if anyone doesn’t feel like getting links go right ahead and not get them 😀
Linda
or should I make the link to the yikis post?
perhaps even better?

Extra-tourist, although the album was released in december 2014, it was reviewed in 2015:

https://yeahiknowitsucks.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/extra-tourist-adventure-time/

Let’s say it will have had the misfortune of missing out on the 2014 top-5 lists…
Also not a 2015 release but the guy had his 10 year annniversary, so good enough reason for me
and I think I won’t calculate in whole digits to get to 5

ah, yes, the Clockwork Orange release ‘Percy’! as said before:

https://yeahiknowitsucks.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/clockwork-orchestra-percy/

Don’t know what the release date is but it was reviewed and uploaded to archive.org in 2015https://archive.org/details/8r099

A very nice upbeat to the Floppy Totaal c2.0 festival!
Graham
Hello Everyone, sorry for taking so long to become a past of this lovely chatterbox. I’ve been putting stuff up on eBay. Anyway, I’m Graham from a place called Southend in the UK. I make music as Rainbow Valley and Little Penguin. I met Kai through the Lobit scene and have remained firm friends ever since. I like Pizza, Pancakes and Doughnuts. I love music in general but particularly love earnest and super positive pop. I hope you are all well, I struggle to pick favourite albums as I often find ones that came out years ago. I will try my best to assemble a list for you over the next couple of days if that is ok? ❤
Linda
Yes!
well, just speaking for myself ofcourse
i dunno what the deadline is
Graham
Haha, thank you Linda, I hope you are good
Linda
I’m fortunate enough to be able to spend the evening on it tonight
yes!
Graham
I have to go to bed soon unfortunately but I will share some musical nuggets with you all soon. x
Linda
Snoring counts
with the proper amount of tension, farting too
Graham
I will record it, hopefully there will be muchos farting
Linda
yes!
😀
you can keep the stench
Graham
I will be in Rotterdam next week, I shall bring you the stench
Linda
nonononononono
Graham
In a jar
Linda
I’ll have my won, thank you very much ;P
hmm, can we light it onfire?
We can light it on fire
ok, bring the stench!
Graham
I’ll swap it for Olliebollen
Linda
Now you’re going too far!
I’ll have some old taai taai 😀
Graham
🙂
Right, bed time
Take care Linda
Linda
Sweet dreams!
I will, tank you!
Graham
Linda
ok, back on crack!
As I am the proud owner of it and Floppy Totaal 2.0 just gave me more things-to-like-but-i-will-never-have-time-for-it on the list
I mean, you can’t have i all
i->it
Great music, good to work on, beautiful art, also nice to work on
And it makes my co-workers ask prettier questions like “hey what is that, is it a …picture?”
Linda
I notice I’m a bit through with it and am more scrolling that reading. May names I see that I for sure will like for the music, but somehow have not had time for to listen or is already on the “ah nice!”, as it is probably someone in this chittychat. And Then I will feel a bit “if I mention one, then it is so sad for the others”,…
Linda
And I realize most of the music is easy to listen to, while I really like the music reviewed on Yikis mostly because it is a nice challenge in deversity.
I just had to keep my head more at work in 2015; couldn’t afford too much experimentation.
ok, so that’s it for now. If I have to organise in order, I will have to say the MutanT.R.I. stands out the most for me atm. I’ll give it a bit more listenings where possible and might add some more later. But I also try to not be so much on fb, so don’t wait for it.
Reed
[Continuing from my last message hours ago] Low’s new album Ones & Sixes is really good, I enjoyed an EP called Pears Of Anguish by Deth Crux, & the couple tracks I streamed from Gold album No Image convinced me to buy the CD, but I haven’t heard the whole thing yet because it’s still in the mail. That’s all I’ve listened to this year because I’ve been writing new material & I didn’t want to accidentally plagiarize someone’s melody or anything.
Johan
That Low abum is really strong indeed, sir!

Alex
Ah, it’s been so much fun reading this so far and getting to know everyone better. 😛 Anyone wanna take a guess as to what KN probably liked the most this year?

Johan
Probably something by a guy named Mark
Graham
Right, for me, it is………… 1. Rodney Cromwell – Age of Anxiety
And I have literally no idea on the last one but the music that has given me extreme pleasure this year includes Lekiddo Lord of the Lobsters –http://www.lekiddo.com/home.html

Blanck Mass, Toxic Chicken
And loads and loads of others I can’t condense into a list because it destroys my brain, so many mazing discoveries, like Belinda Bendekovic ❤ ❤ ❤https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z96yXaysCCw

Oh why didn’t you reply to my email 😦
Anyway, that’s me, great to read everyone elses choices

Alex
Yeah, I almost wish Belinda Bedekovic were all five of my five in a way! 🙂 I was thinking some more about it, because really I had no clue of my list when I started this, but I think I have to put some Toxic Chicken on this thing for sure and I remember reviewing Dog Park Electronix this year, it was pretty fantastic, so that’s my #2. I think I just need a #1 and a #3 now. 😛

Graham
Yeah, Dog Park Electronix was awesome, actually, that should be my 5th choice.
Cameron
One of mine has to be Graham Bole – First New Day. It has a really good sound and is very BOC.
Reed
Oh, can’t believe I forgot about these, but Purity Ring’s & CHVRCHES’ albums this year were both very enjoyable & full of earworms.
Johan
is it about free/reviewed albums or does anythin go? chvrches is one of my favorite bands, but I thought it was about free albums/stuff 🙂
Reed
I don’t know. Alex just told me to list what I’ve listened to this year, because I’ve listened to barely anything. I don’t think anything I’ve mentioned is free…
Johan
Nope  I’ll also make a non free top 5 😀
Cameron
I’m gonna do any album, free or not, popular and underground in the same list.

Alex
Yeah, no rules!

Cameron
huzzah1
Adrian
ANARACHY
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Alex
Shout, shout, let it all out

Reed
These are the things I can do without

Alex
Come on… I’m talking to you

Reed
So come on
Adrian
Hehe
Ok favorite Tears for Fears song? I think I have to go with Pale Shelter
Johan
Has to be Mad World for me
Johan
Johan's Burgers

Adrian
Well that is indeed a familiar face.

And it resides in a worn out place.

Johan
Best commercial album Muse – Drones. The funny thing about Muse is, that I didn’t like them at all when they first started. Found myself to ‘Oh My Goth’ that time, I guess. My girlfriend really liked them a lot. Then a started listening to them ocassionaly and when I heard ‘Map of the Problematique’ on the radio, and didn’t know it was Muse, I really digged the track. So from that day on I started listening more and more. Next year I will go to their concert. Life is strange and we are getting older.
Johan
*add your own paragraphs*
Reed
My last thing to add for this year, I also bought Hooded Menace’s Darkness Drips Forth, but that’s another one I haven’t been able to listen to all the way through because Relapse mail-order SUCKS & takes forever. I expect it to be enjoyable because all Hooded Menace albums sound pretty much the same, & that is groovy as fuck.
Adrian
VARIETY IS THE SPICE IF LIFE. SPICE UP YOUR LIFE. Damn it now Spice Girls is stuck in my head.
Resquin
mensagem subliminar em português
Adrian
Hm I’m bored. What are we all doing today?

Alex
I’ve been doing way too much. Working, driving all over the place. Eating food. It’s nuts.

Johan
Been sick 😦 now watching The voice of Holland

Alex
Sorry to hear! How’s the voice of Holland?

Johan
I think this year it is pretty good. One guy only does old rock songs like ‘Johnny B. Good’. And two really good girls . And one old r&b singer who has been jailed and doing drugs and now is clean again. And he is so fucking good.
Reed
I’m sanding a bathroom so I can paint it, listening to random music on my phone, & subconsciously working on lyrics.
Johan
Are you going to sing on some tracks? Or are you writing them for others?
Reed
I’m going to sing on almost all the tracks on the new album. I consider it a “pop” record, so there are only 2 or 3 instrumental tracks on a 14 track album.
Johan
Wow cool!
Reed
This whole thing has been taking so long because I had to learn how to write actual songs, not just the melodic noisy things I was doing.
Johan
I am really excited to hear it!
Reed
Thanks. I have a pretty crappy singing voice, but it is mine & I’m going to own it.
Johan
And are you going to do noisy music? It will that also be pop like?
Or will….
Reed
The main sound is heavy drone rock. There are noisy elements, especially a lot of fuzz & reverb creating dense walls of guitar tone, & I still don’t know how to play drums, so some of the percussion tracks are assembled from junk sounds & homemade stomp boxes. There’s only one dedicated noise track, but I definitely took what I learned from my noise experiments to add a different element to the music.
Johan
Wow nice will be on the 2016 list then 😉
Reed
Thanks. I’m working hard to make that happen.
Reed
That package from Relapse finally came, so I can add to my 2015 list by saying Hooded Menace’s Darkness Drips Forth is slower & heavier, while a little less groovy than their previous albums. The songs are all 10+ min long & generally more crushing, whereas past albums, particularly Never Cross The Dead, had a bit more spring in their step. I feel like Hooded Menace have been gradually transforming from a guilty pleasure to a more serious doom band. The awesome dual guitar harmonies are thankfully still there & still totally slay. It’s not the best thing I’ve heard this year, but it’s an excellent fix for my (& anyone else’s) doom habit.
Reed
& the package I was waiting for from Profound Lore arrived, so the absolutely last thing I have to add is that Gold’s No Image is fantastic: everything from the songwriting to the art direction on the packaging is flawless, & it can appeal to more than just death rock enthusiasts. I’m terrible at picking favorites, but it’s up there with Monolord’s Vænir & Bell Witch’s Four Phantoms as one of the best things I heard this year.

Alex
Alex added Karel De Goede.

Reed
If I remember correctly, the original goal was a top 5, so I’m going to say:
1. Gold – No Image 2. Monolord – Vænir 3. Low – Ones & Sixes 4. Bell Witch – Four Phantoms 5. CHVRCHES – Every Open Eye
Adrian
Ok so I’m saying fuck it to the links. I figure people can have the pleasure of lookin shit up themselves \o/
Also when the hell is thing supposed to be posted again?
Cameron
im really confused as to when its gonna be posted as ive gave one album
Adrian
Also i meant our dear readers and not the studs/studdettes included here also happy holidays and such to all and yeah
Karel
Whoohoohoo I’m the sucky spirit of the festive season, I represent depression, Christmas cakes, alcohol intolerance, burning the roads of yesteryear’s nonsense and the occasional fireworks. Is this the chitter chat to find a hot date to start a new life in the new year? How are you all doing and most importantly what are you all wearing? If you are confused, then imagine all the people… (Insert a Beatles song..) and how confused I am. More then normal even! And the words are not even written down in the top notch Portuguese language…
So let me get this bended and then straight; this is about the tops of the crops of 2015? Well in order to continue I’ve got to tell you that you are all having to share my number one spot. It might be a little crowded but whoohooo you got to live with it, folks. Music wise, the top five of the year must be filled with releases and artists and discoveries that appeared here on YIKIS, so please stand up and dance among the five empty chairs and when the non existing music stops ; run as fast to the closest chair and sit down. The weaker ones that didn’t conquer a top five chair could join me in the ‘hold fireworks in your hand for five minute challenge, a challenge that would be extremely popular on social media, even outshining the bucket with ice cubes challenge. Whoo hoohoo..Still let me try to think lightly and award some special attention to things on the tip of my mind.. Artists of the year…

1. Vomir (no ideas, no reasons, just embodies emptiness in a solid way; I’m hooked!)

2. Mark Williams (because that is the singer & songwriter that everyone should know and hear about; wonderful stuff no matter what year it is!)

3. Agnes Pe (because her colorful experimental happy music never failed to make me smile.

4. Petunia liebling mc pumpkin , because her songs & video art are full of hard work, love and really establish itself as a audio and visual escape from reality.. Talking fish and singing plants are just the top of the iceberg.

5. That alien dude… I.V. Martinez not because he is haunting me in my dreams and nightmares with stuff we have to listen, but actually because all his releases had been rather excellent trip dope for the brain…

Gosh too fives are so short & limited.. I could have made a million top fives and yet feel not satisfied and left out the important things. I mean everything-whistler Henry Glissenaar deserves a whole top five spot all to himself! An amazing whistling artist that can almost whistle on anything! It doesn’t come and sound better than that! (According to my personal festive spirit and opinion..)

Also Graham Boosey is my number one of 2015. He brought in so many interesting music makers and interviewed with so much love.. I’m on my knees thanking him for the joy he had giving me (and hopefully you, dear readers..)

Also specially sharing with Adrian because of his brand new level of combining side wards photography with music reviews. I really feel like he gave us the fresh air and outside looks we needed and craved.

I would like to say again thank you to Alex Spalding as he too had been shining like a super star in this year. So much music he had made, but also so much action and cultural entertainment he had giving here on YIKIS; damnit he even turned the whole place in a museum!

Special attention goes to Spicky Lee Jones our music reviewing hamster.. He had let me know his top five of the year 2015:

1 Eep eep. (Eep eep) , 2 Eep (eep eep eep) , 3 Eep (eep) , 4 Eep eep (eep eep) , 5 EEP EEP (eep eep eep eep eep)

Woohoohoo before I go back to cry under a palm tree in a place that is still Christmas free, I’ll also would give artist and label owner Jjoth a nice mention. With his label 8Ravens he delivers throughout the years a never disappointing flow of great quality releases in 8kbps! A sound that makes me weep from sentiment and joy & herby I hijack this moment to show my honest gratitude to keep the lobit underground spirit alive and solid like a rock.

Thank you, you are a life safer!!

I could go on and on mentioning labels that had been important in my life the last year.. Attenuation circuit, dog park records, weakie discs, floppy kick, floppy noise etc.. But I should refrain from that as it’s simply too festive & feel it could go all wrong by mentioning the wrong label on the wrong spot, or simply forgetting all the other ones

So now it’s time to say goodbye from me, so I leave you too rambled in shambles of even more confusion. Love you all and in my book you are all a number one in a top five! Shine and live friendly friends; may the powers of suck be with you! Xxxx

Alex
I think this thing is about ready to be posted now, hahaha… just gotta finish adding some flavor to it while forgetting my self-aware commentary will probably be weird for people to read. I never finished my top 5, but at the same time, I can’t count to five anyway, so it all works out in the end. MERRY YIKISMAS!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

Adrian
flavor? this thing is dripping from the dick with flavor already. HOW MUCH MORE COULD IT POSSIBLY NEED?!?#?#

Alex
Dash of pepper.

Adrian
Oh. Carry on then.
