WeaklingChild wants us all to validate it’s meaningless existence by checking out (and probably hearing) this tape. What’s on it? Clearly Weakling Child’s album titled ‘Core’ is on it, or at least that’s what we presume. I’m one of these (un)lucky people who isn’t in the financial position to get my claws on one of these tapes, but luckily there is a way to hear it through the digital internet. Goth bless!
It starts (as you do) with soft crackles, the ones that feels like it’s the ambient variant of a harsh noise wall but somehow feels more decadent, well mannered and polite. For some idiotic reason I imagine Sherlock Holmes and Watson smoking pipes in full old fashioned detective outfit near a calm burning fireplace. Glass of wine in one hand and smoke coming out of all four their nose holes… both of them clearly enjoying the crackling cozy atmosphere.
After a fine time with the two old school lads (and their pipe smoking habits) the album changes. The cracklings makes space for a deep drone, only traceable with a good pair of speakers / headphones or descent boombox; telephones are a no-go… The sound hums away in its minimal dressage while sometimes a sporadic fart of sound pops up. Whoops! Who did it? Shall we blame Watson or Sherlock? The first one to notice is probably the guilty one! In any case it is clear that WeaklingChild’s minimalistic approach to music leaves enough space for the imagination to go berserk with.
Side B is like a comfortable refreshing breeze that keeps itself blowing. The air within it is dense and dreamy, as if it’s floating among the trees of a forest. All in all the music of Core is as minimal as it can get, as if to say that WeaklingChild is all about the beauty in pure nihilism. I’m glad that this artist gives into it and celebrates minimalism through this fine tape, it helps me to step back from hectic sound environments and appreciate a much more calmer approach of having ‘something’ among the emptiness.
